William Edward Codd, Sick Berth Attendant (P/SBR/X 7234), was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, on March 21st 1911. His father, George Arthur Codd was Foreman Lamplighter in Barnsley Municipal Corporation, and later an architect and surveyor. His mother was Eleanor Caroline Codd, née Burrow, who died on August 14th 1940.
At the time of his marriage to Annie Elizabeth Hind in 1932, William was a coal miner. The couple had two children.
