Frederick Thomas Cheney, Chief Stoker (P/K 35233), was born in Puncknowle, Dorset on July 10th 1898, the son of Charles Cheney, a labourer, and Mary Jane Cheney, née Moore. On his service record, Frederick’s occupation was given as game keeper.

Frederick entered the Royal Navy in July 1916, and was appointed Chief Stoker in 1934. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1931. He joined HMS Dunedin on August 23rd 1939.

He was married to Nellie Susan Archer, with whom he had three children.
