William Alfred Brown, Engine-Room Artificer 3^rd Class (P/MX 47769), was born in Portsmouth on July 2^nd 1913, the only son of John William Brown, a photographer employed by the Admiralty at HMS Vernon in Portsmouth, and his wife Clara Jane Brown, née Milligan (1879-1925).
