Leading Signalman George Ardley was born on November 26th 1898 in Halstead, Essex, the eldest child of Alfred and Kate Ardley (née Hearn). He entered the Royal Navy on his eighteenth birthday in 1916, and was awarded the R.N. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1938. He joined HMS Dunedin on August 22nd 1939.
In 1929, he married Bessie Tyrrell, with whom he had a son.
