HMS DUNEDIN REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

ROYAL NAVAL WAR MEMORIAL, SOUTHSEA COMMON

13:15 hours Saturday 24th November 2018

The Welcome

Stuart Gill

The Service

Conducted by

The Rev. Colin Noyce RN

We meet here today to remember all who served in HMS Dunedin, especially those who lost their lives on active service. Let us remember the families and friends of those who served in her and who waited anxiously for their return. Also at this time let us give thought to the survivors, for the fortitude and courage with which they faced the awful circumstances they found themselves having to confront in the four days following the sinking of HMS Dunedin.

Almighty and ever loving God as we gather in lasting memory of those who served in HMS Dunedin, let us recall the deed and example of those who have been instrumental in guarding our Nation, especially those who died in the cause of freedom and peace and those who have crossed the bar since then.

Reverently and gratefully, we remember them.

ALL: We will remember them.

Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted even by death, hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all who have served our state and nation in two world wars and in conflicts in the years gone by since then. We pray also for those who continue to serve upon the seas, on land and in the air as members of our armed forces, give them wisdom, give them courage, give them hope and keep them faithful to you, now and always.  Amen.

The Naval Hymn

Eternal Father strong to save,

Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

O hear us when we cry to Thee

For those in peril on the sea.

O Trinity of love and power,

Our brethren shield in danger’s hour

From rock and tempest, fire and foe,

Protect them wheresoe’r they go:

Thus evermore shall rise to Thee

Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

The Naval Prayer

ALL: O Eternal Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens and rulest the raging of the sea; who has compassed the waters with bounds until day and night come to an end: Be pleased to receive into thy almighty and gracious protection the persons of us thy servants and the Fleet in which we served. Preserve them from the dangers of the sea and of the air and from the violence of the enemy; That they may be a safeguard unto our most gracious Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth, and her Dominions, and a security for such as pass on the seas upon their lawful occasions: and that the inhabitants of our Island and Commonwealth may in peace and quietness serve Thee our God; and that they may return in safety to enjoy the blessings of this land, with the fruits of their labour and with a thankful remembrance of Thy mercies to praise and glorify thy Holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.      Amen

THE ACT OF REMEMBRANCE

Let us remember before God, and commend to His sure keeping; those who died on active service; those whom we knew, and whose memory we cherish; and all who died in the service of mankind.

THE EXHORTATION

(Given by Michael Gill, son of William Gill, RM)

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning

We will remember them”

Response: We will remember them

THE LAST POST

(Two minutes silence will be observed)

REVEILLE

THE KOHIMA EPITAPH

(Given by Rory McKenna, Grandson of Ronald Shinn)

“When you go home, tell them of us and say

For your tomorrow, we gave our today”

Response: We will not break faith with you

Wreath laying will now commence, the first being laid on behalf of all members of the Dunedin Society by Jill Oliver, (daughter of Jim Davis.)

The LORD’S PRAYER

ALL: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive them that trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the Kingdom, The power and the glory,

For ever and ever.   Amen

THE BLESSING

Go forth into the world in peace, be of good courage, hold fast to that which is good, render to no man evil for evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support to the weak, love and serve your neighbour as yourself.

And may the joy of this and every day be yours, the joy of hearts and homes, of memories and friendships and togetherness be yours; and the Blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you this day and forever more.

Amen

After the end of the Ceremony there will be a Group Photograph.

Our special thanks go to the Rev. Colin Noyce RN OCM
