McCall, AS Biographical Notes

Mentioned in Watson Report:

“Both these boys [McCall and Morris] showed a very cool and courageous spirit throughout the period spent on the raft. Neither uttered a single word of complaint and both willingly and cheerfully carried out whatever duty was required of them.”

Boy was on the last raft to be rescued by SS Nishmaha, along with twenty two others, including Les Barter, who became an early member of the Dunedin Society.

He died on 1st May 2018, greatly missed by his family and all the members of the Dunedin Society. He was the last living survivor of the tragedy of HMS Dunedin. Here is the notice we published on the Home Page to mark his death:

Andrew (Boy) McCall

It is with great sadness that we report that Andrew (Boy) McCall died on 1st May. Boy, aMcCall, ASs he was affectionately known until the end of his life, was a devoted supporter of the Dunedin Society. As he was the last known surviving member of the ship’s company of HMS Dunedin, his passing marks the closure of a long and eventful chapter in the history of HMS Dunedin.

Boy McCall will be remembered by all members of the Dunedin Society for his warmth and his great contribution to the preservation of the memory of the men of HMS Dunedin. He received a special mention for his exemplary behaviour after the sinking. Lieutenant-Commander Watson wrote this in his first dispatch on the sinking: “Both these boys [McCall and Morris] showed a very cool and courageous spirit throughout the period spent on the raft. Neither uttered a single word of complaint and both willingly and cheerfully carried out whatever duty was required of them.”

Rest in Peace, Boy. Your shipmates are waiting for you.
